Perfectionism and the need for order

Perfectionism gets praised until the day it stops working, and by then it is load-bearing.

Draft, awaiting clinical review

This page is a working draft. It has not yet been reviewed and approved by our clinical team, and it is not indexed by search engines until it is.

What this is about

It usually began as a strategy that worked: being the capable one bought approval, or safety, or quiet. The cost shows up later as procrastination that looks like laziness, work that never feels finished, an inability to delegate, and a running commentary that would be unacceptable from anyone else. Order can be soothing, and it can also become a cage that shrinks as the anxiety grows.

What work here looks like

This page is not about OCD, which is a distinct condition with a specific treatment. If checking or intrusive thoughts are driving the ordering, that is worth naming with a clinician.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis. If you are in immediate danger or worried you might act on thoughts of harming yourself, please contact Tele-MANAS (14416 or 1-800-89-14416, available 24×7 across India) or your local emergency services.
