Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT works on the loop between what you think, how you feel and what you then do. It is structured, practical, and usually shorter than open-ended therapy.
This page is a working draft. It has not yet been reviewed and approved by our clinical team, and it is not indexed by search engines until it is.
What this is about
The premise is simple: the interpretation you put on a situation shapes the feeling that follows, and the feeling shapes what you do next. Often that loop has been running so long it feels like plain fact rather than one reading among several. CBT slows the loop down enough to look at it, tests the thought against the evidence rather than against your mood, and then changes the behaviour that keeps it in place.
What work here looks like
It suits people who like structure, homework between sessions, and a clear sense of what is being worked on. It is well evidenced for anxiety, panic, low mood and OCD. It is less the right first move when what you are carrying is old, relational and hard to put into words, though it is often combined with approaches that are.
