Emotionally Focused Therapy

EFT works on the cycle a couple gets stuck in, rather than on who was right about the dishes.

Draft, awaiting clinical review

This page is a working draft. It has not yet been reviewed and approved by our clinical team, and it is not indexed by search engines until it is.

What this is about

Most recurring fights are not about their content. Underneath, one person is protesting a loss of connection and the other is trying to stop making things worse, and each move confirms the other person's fear. EFT slows that cycle down until both people can see it as something happening to them jointly, and then works on the reaching and responding that the cycle has been blocking.

What work here looks like

It has strong evidence with couples and is also used individually. It asks both people to be willing to look at their own part, which is why it is not the right first step where there is coercion, abuse or violence in a relationship.
